Lesson 2

Colors and Numbers

Objective:

to identify the basic colors and to describe the flags of the countries in the German-speaking world; to count from 1 to 20

Materials:

pages 4-5 in Das Deutschbuch (Seite4.pdf, Seite5.pdf); color cards

Procedure:

A. Review saying hello, introducing yourself (approx. 5 min)
Guten Tag! Wer bist du? Wie geht’s?

B. Numbers 1-10 (approx. 10 min)
Introduce the numbers 1-10 two or three numbers at a time.
eins, zwei drei, vier und fünf, sechs und sieben

Write the following rhyme on the board and go over the words.
eins, zwei, Polizei
drei, vier, kaltes Bier
fünf, sechs, alte Hex
sieben, acht, gute Nacht
neun, zehn, auf Wiedersehen

Continue practicing by counting non-stop from 1-10 and then backwards.

D. Numbers 11-20 (approx. 5 min)
Introduce the numbers 11-20 in a similar fashion. Look at page 4 in Das Deutschbuch. You can also practice counting by twos and threes or by counting only odd or even numbers.

E. TPR (approx. 8 min)
Use Total Physical Response to practice numbers. Demonstrate each new verb. Get the students even more involved by having them carry out the command quickly (schnell), slowly (langsam), loudly (laut), or quietly (leise):
Klatscht 2mal, 4mal, 6mal Geht _____ Schritte nach vorn
Hopst 2mal, 4mal, 6mal Geht _____ Schritte zurück
Klopft 1mal, 3mal, 5mal
Another option is to play Paul sagt after you have introduced these commands.

F. Clapping game (approx. 7 min)

G. Colors (approx. 5 min)

Begin by writing the following colors on the board:

  • blau
  • weiß
  • rot
  • schwarz
  • grün
  • braun
  • orange
  • violett
  • gelb
  • rosa
  • golden
  • silbern
  • grau

Pronounce each word and have the students repeat after you. Then have the students guess the English equivalents.

Using the color cards, ask the students questions.

  • Ist das grün? blau?
  • Welche Farbe ist das?

You can also use TPR to continue practicing colors:

  • Zeigt auf etwas Weißes!

H. Die Fahnen (approx. 5 min)
Do the activity on page 5 in Das Deutschbuch.
