Dear Parents,

This fall 5th and 6th graders at [school name] Elementary School participated in “Introducing German!” This is a German Outreach Program presented by the Department of German at [your institution]. The eight-lesson German unit for 5th and 6th graders at [school name] Elementary School has just ended. In order to assess the effectiveness of this program and to plan for the future, we would be interested in some feedback from you. Any responses you can provide to the questions on the back of this sheet will be much appreciated.

During this unit, the students were introduced to some of the basics of the German language and culture. They learned how to greet each other, identify colors and animals, name and describe their family members, identify parts of the body and articles of clothing, count from 1-20, and discuss their favorite activities. They concluded the unit by either writing a visual poem or describing their family or a favorite animal. You can get additional information about this program, including the lesson plans used for these units, from our web site listed below.

Let me add that the undergraduate German instructors from [your institution] who taught this program very much enjoyed working with the [name of school] classes. They appreciated the students’ enthusiasm and their interest in the material.

Thank you for your support in filling out this brief questionnaire; please return it to your child’s teacher. Your feedback will help us plan the future of the language program. It will remain confidential and the inclusion of any contact information is, of course, completely optional. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions about the program or any additinoal suggestions for improving it.

Sincerely,

Has your child talked to you about the German lessons?

Has your child tried to demonstrate his or her German knowledge to you?

What aspect of the lessons was most interesting to your child?

Which junior or middle school will your child attend?

If German is not offered at that junior high or middle school would you be interested in having it added to the curriculum?

Would you like to see the German Outreach Program expanded beyond its current eight-lesson format?
